Good ear health is essential.
Otology is the study, diagnosis and treatment of ear disorders and diseases.

Patients may be referred to an otologist like me by their General Practitioner (GP) if they are experiencing problems with the ear, hearing loss or balance related disorders. As an otologist and ENT Specialist I can perform surgery on the ears if required. If you’re experiencing problems with your ears contact your GP as soon as possible.

Ear pain & discharge

Otalgia (ear pain) is common and often first discussed with your GP. There are many diverse causes which may be referred to an ENT surgeon like me. Read more.

Ear pain & discharge

Pain that originates from the ear is called primary otalgia, and the most common causes are otitis media and otitis externa. Examination of the ear usually reveals abnormal findings in patients with primary otalgia. Pain that originates outside the ear is called secondary otalgia, and the etiology can be difficult to establish because of the complex innervation of the ear. If you ear pain or unexplained discharge please consult your GP for a preliminary checkup.

Hearing loss

Young children are prone to a range of problems associated with hearing loss. For example, eustachian tube dysfunction (the tube connecting the ear to the nose)  may result in fluid (effusions) collecting behind the tympanic membrane (eardrum) causing a conductive loss.

Hearing loss

If you have experienced mild, moderate, or severe hearing loss please see your General Practitioner. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is when a patient suddenly loses hearing. Medical treatment with oral steroids is usually indicated early in the event to attempt to restore and prevent hearing loss from being permanent. However the causes of hearing loss can be many and require specialised attention.

Surgery

I perform a range of procedures to address ear functioning including Myringoplasty (perforation eardrum), Tympanoplasty (surgery to the eardrum’s tympanic membrane), Exostoses Surgery (for benign growth of bone extending outwards from the surface of a bone).

Surgery

Most children with  problems can be treated easily with simple measures and medication. However, sometimes surgery may be required. I specialise in a range of procedures designed to address ear function and specific issues that cause pain or discomfort. Contact me to discuss your specific concerns.
